How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first workout… what was it, and how did it feel?
I was first exposed to CrossFit by Coach Mike Profumo in 2006. I remember doing “Fight Gone Bad” for my first time WOD and feeling what it truly feels like to test your fitness. I had never been challenged in that kind of way. I was very quickly addicted to the new kinds of training techniques many strength professionals were implementing as the sport gained brand notoriety.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CrossFit at 580? (before/after)
Getting older has its challenges especially ones that included major injuries. I got married, had some kids and started letting myself go. Fitness took a backseat, and it was starting to affect my heart and health. The CrossFit environment and practices sparked the flame again in a fun new competitive way. It single handily started transforming my body back into the shape that I once felt in my 20’s but it’s been a slow meticulous process that continues to take max weekly participation and effort. You’re only as good as the people you surround yourself with. The CrossFit 580 family and community has defined programming that gets results. Technique, Timing, Support, Passion, and Results is how I can best explain my fitness level today based on joining the CF 580 Family.
What changes in your life have you experienced from CF580 that were totally unexpected?
Functional Movements and Daily routine challenges improved mentally and physically. The community aspect of the fitness journey has been the most rewarding. We are never alone in the fitness journey, and Crossfit will prove just how impressive the human body can be at peak fitness levels.
Please share with us any favorite CF580 moments.
Transitioning from boot camp to the CF WOD’s. It felt very rewarding to actually start loading the workouts after the long road to slowly get back into shape just using body weight. The first RX next to your name on the WOD board was a great accomplishment after being out of the game for so long.
Any advice for people just getting started?
Listen to your body and ask a lot of questions. The daily competition is part of the draw to the sport, but let it be less about the total reps or fastest time in the beginning. Learn the movements well “first” and train to slowly load those movements. In time it will shift your body to be able to start playing with the numbers and weights. Make a friend and do some partner Wod’s too, Team is the best part.
