Tell us about your fitness/lifestyle background: I have been active most of my life – I started going on runs with my father when I was 13 or 14 years old, in fact, 20 years later we still go running together on occasion. I continued to run throughout college, I joined a gym but mostly stuck with the cardio equipment as I did not really know how to lift weights. After graduation, I kept up with my running, completed several half-marathons and one full marathon. Again, I joined a gym because I wanted to mix up my workouts but it was hard to keep myself motivated in an environment where you are stuck to a machine and doing repetitive movements over and over again. I wanted to learn and I wanted more human interaction so I tried different classes at the gym, spinning, and personal training.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit 580? Take us back to your first workout…what was it and how did it feel? I moved from Sacramento to Livermore and was looking for a gym. I got interested in Crossfit because I liked the idea of a group class, a coach, and the fact that I did not have to figure out workouts all by myself. I wanted to try something different – I did not know what that “different” meant exactly but I knew that whatever I was doing on my own was not working – I felt like I plateaued and could not quite figure out how to improve. I do not specifically remember my first workout at Crossfit 580 but I remember feeling pretty clueless for a while – Not only did I have to scale down a lot of workouts, I was not even familiar with a lot of movements – cleans, snatches, etc were all new terminology…
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health, and fitness since starting CrossFit 580 (before/after)? Overall, I feel stronger and more confident. Crossfit has also motivated me to adjust my diet to be more nutritious & balanced which has significantly helped with my performance – I can lift more and run/row faster now so that’s exciting. I actually needed to gain weight to gain strength, and that is what I am working on right now.
What changes in your life have you experienced from CrossFit 580 that were totally unexpected? I did not expect to like it as much as I do now. I initially joined to build more strength to help me with my running but I was not consistent. I am tall and thin so strength training did not come naturally to me. Then I broke my small toe and I could not run for a few months so I started going to Crossfit more regularly instead and that is when I started noticing progress. It has become a much more significant part of my life now and something I look forward to doing every time I go.
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit 580 moments. There are many – achieving a new PR, the feeling of accomplishment while lying breathless on the floor drenched in sweat after a challenging workout… At the same time, it’s all about the people, new friendships, sense of camaraderie, and positive atmosphere which keep me coming for more 🙂
What are your hobbies, interests, and/or talents outside of Crossfit 580? One of my favorite things to do is go to a coffee shop, have a hot cup of coffee, and read the newspaper – as an introvert I find it thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing. I also enjoy travelling and try to squeeze in a few trips to new places every year. Lastly, I like to challenge myself by setting new goals and learning new skills – right now, it’s the Spartan Trifecta races (done with Sprint & Super while Beast is tentatively scheduled for Oct) as well as completing my private pilot training.
Any advice for people just getting started? Try it but give it a fair shot and commit to it for a month or two. Learning a new skill is challenging in the beginning but you will be amazed how far you will get and how much you will learn in the process.
