Tell us about your fitness and/or lifestyle background:
Being 6’4” I was always slender, most of my life I never had any issues with eating anything and everything I wanted. I was very active, enjoyed snowboarding ever winter. Not until I turned 40 did I start to notice the pants starting to get snugger. I’m huge sucker for after dinner cookies and milk @ 8:30 at night before bed. It was this past December when I was trying on pants at the outlets that my waist size became a 38 vs. 33-34 in high school. I had said enough is enough. The problem was that I hated working out, it was so boring, and it felt like I was a hamster on a wheel.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit 580? Take us back to your first workout… what was it, and how did it feel?
I had a friend who had joined Crossfit580 several years earlier, I had visited other CrossFit’s in the area but felt like their onboard process was not user friendly at all. When I started “on ramp” with Joy, the first class she showed us some work outs and new movements I was unfamiliar with, she then said “OK lets work out now” I was like what were we just doing? I felt like I was going to die than I saw this pregnant woman who was working out like a savage, I felt so inadequate and unhealthy that my new determination was to lift more and be quicker than the pregnant women in the class. I know you say what a low standard, however I am always amazed at how strong and fast many of the woman who work out at CrossFit 580 are or become. The whole community aspect of working out with others has blown my mind, I cannot think of a better group of people spend an hour of my day with and continue to lift me up and encourage me to do more.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CrossFit 580? (before/after)
Everyday working out was pure hell, in the beginning I thought I was going to throw up every day. The first month I just showed up and did what I was told and kept a low profile (I guess because I felt so puny). Every month the coaches help me improve my movements and help me scale my exercises and still to this day I have many exercises I just can’t do because of previous construction injuries on my back and knee. The greatest momentum came when one of the coaches designed a diet for me to follow. At first the portions were so much smaller than I used to, every day I craved my cookies and milk, but I persevered and after 3 months of my new diet I shed 1.5” off my waist and 20 lbs. I started at around 225lbs. and some days I’m down to 203 lbs.
What changes in your life have you experienced from CrossFit 580 that were totally unexpected?
Mental toughness, doing my first box jump I was so intimidated by the exercise. However now I do what the WOD entails and I don’t give a second thought, there are times I just want to quit, but I look over to the pregnant girl and I just suck it up. I love to work out every day; I eat healthy all week and cheat on the weekends. I also joined a local gym on my off days from CrossFit 580 to compliment my overall strength and work, on getting my beach muscles, which I’ve never really had. However being fit at 44 years old takes on a whole new meaning than being fit at 18 years old.

Laughing at or with Coach Steven Pachan he makes every workout day fun.
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit 580?
Snowboarding, bike rides with the family, any and all forms of cooking, baking and BBQ
Any advice for people just getting started?
Don’t allow a previous injury to hold you back from healthy living, the coaches work around previous injuries or movement limitations. Keep your eye on the pregnant woman if they can do it you can too!
