Favorite movement: as of now it’s anything with weights
Least favorite movement: anything that requires running or jumping
Tell us about your fitness/lifestyle background: During my 30s, I went to the gym regularly. I didn’t have a personal trainer showing me the proper use of weights so I just relied on directions on the machines and also used the treadmill. Due to lots of pregnancy complications, I had to take a long break from exercising until the children came. Being a mother and teacher to my kids took most of my time and my fitness lifestyle took a backseat. Last Feb. 2015, I made a decision that it was time to take charge of my health and well-being. I also need to get out of the house in order to focus on myself. I joined some bootcamp classes in Pleasanton but didn’t feel motivated to drive there at night. So I signed up at a nearby gym and started going there using their circuit machines. Often the gym was not crowded and there was no trainer but it felt good to be able to have my “me” time. Lo and Behold, the gym closed due to lack of business. I was back to square one, searching for the right place. I googled many places, read their reviews, visited and talked to the people. I realized that I definitely did not want another big place with equipment. I wanted a real coach and a welcoming community that would be my motivation to keep going. I eventually landed at CF580 because of the bootcamp classes.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit 580? Take us back to your first workout…what was it and how did it feel? I spoke to Joy about trying a class but I was not sure how the coaches would treat people who are not familiar with the crossfit way. I also confided that I get intimidated by “Barbie-looking” coaches because based on my past experiences, they sometimes cannot relate to newbies (and oldies) like me. She gave me some information about the coach and her credentials, plus assured me that anybody is welcome at CF580 no matter what their fitness level is. I mentally blocked the videos about Crossfit that I had researched at YouTube because I thought there’s NO way I could do those kind of exercises. I was fortunate to have a one-on-one bootcamp session on my first (trial) day. The workouts were hard but the coach was nice enough to scale them for me. Glad it was just the two of us that morning. I learned how to do burpees the crossfit way. I would probably not come back if she had not been intuitive to my capabilities yet still very encouraging.
What have you seen in your body, health, and fitness since starting CrossFit 580 (before/after)? In the beginning, my knees and ankles hurt the next day after the workout. Now I don’t get that anymore. I also feel more confident and notice that I have some muscle tone even under the loose skin – lol. Clothes shopping is not as excruciating as they seem to fit better. I have more energy when I come home from a WOD, my blood sugar seems to stay stable all day and I don’t get into a slump. I feel stronger, and braver (and younger – 😁) to add a bit more weight to the barbell. I remember to “keep moving” throughout the day. I am constantly working on making healthier food choices for me and my family.
What changes in your life have you experienced from CrossFit 580 that were totally unexpected? I did not expect to sign up for Crossfit! I started by attending bootcamps which were wonderful but I was also curious about what happens at the Crossfit classes. I want to lift weights correctly because I realize that at my age, I need to build strength on my bones and joints. Having better muscle tones will be extra nice too 🙂 I wanted to look fit like other athletes but because I didn’t have any athletic background, it made me doubt if I can really do it. But over time, with the coaching and encouragement from my coach and friends at CF580, I started to develop mental toughness and believe that I can. I knew I can always challenge myself and stop when I reach my limit for the day. Tomorrow will be a new day to give it another shot and it will be better than yesterday because I did not give up. My outlook about aging is more positive – thanks to Coach Steve Pachan’s 8 year plan. 😁. (You’ll have to ask him what that is.)
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit 580 moments. Lots of favorite moments – being greeted enthusiastically by my coach when I walk in the door takes away some of my nervousness. I like how we joke and laugh because it lightens the mood and intensity of the one hour workout. It’s great that people cheer for one another. I don’t feel judged when I am unable to do certain movements because we are all putting out our best effort. I appreciate the look of pride, high fives, and words of encouragement from my coach and friends. I feel a sense of accomplishment after completing the WOD and it’s great to achieve a new PR. The positive energy and the CF580 community motivates me to be better.
What are you hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit 580? I enjoy reading, cooking, baking, playing the piano, listening to music, traveling, doing service projects with my kids, and eating dark chocolate. I like to paint when I have more time.
Any advice for people just getting started? Don’t let the name Crossfit intimidate you because the coaches are knowledgeable and can gauge your level and scale the workout if they have to. Don’t compare yourself with others, just do your best. I chose CF580 not just for their excellent programming, coaching and community but also because of the integrity of the owner – the last one being important, is what sealed the deal for me.
Whether you’re in your twenties or fifties, it’s never too late to get started. I will be there to give you hope and to let you know that if I can do it, you can do it even better (esp. if you’re still young). 😉.
