Tell us about your fitness and/or lifestyle background:
I have had a pretty active sports background. Growing up I played sports all the time (baseball, basketball, and soccer). In high school and college at Penn State, I did track and field, where I threw the shotput and discus. Afterwards, I have intermittently played basketball and lifted weights. I like to be active in my free time by going hiking, camping, and fishing.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit 580? Take us back to your first workout… what was it, and how did it feel?
I moved to Livermore for 4 months for an internship at a local start up company. I have been searching for a gym or fitness group which I would enjoy enough to regularly attend. I’ve heard about Crossfit before and thought it may be a good fit for my competitive athletics background coupled with a fun team atmosphere. Crossfit580 was within walking distance of my apartment and all the reviews online were 5 stars. To be honest, I can’t remember my first workout vividly, as I was so out of shape I nearly passed out, but I really enjoyed how motivating the coaches and fellow athletes were. I was happily sore the next day 🙂
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CrossFit 580? (before/after)
It’s been a great change since starting at 580. I started around 217 lbs body weight, not being able to do a pull up with pretty bad cardio stamina. After 3 and a half months of consistent attendance to Crossfit580, I just crossed under the 200 lb mark, completed my first bar muscle up and can keep up with many of the senior Crossfit guys in terms of stamina. I’m now in the best shape of my life. My abs are just beginning to show, a plus before the summer beach season 🙂
What changes in your life have you experienced from CrossFit 580 that were totally unexpected?
Through the great coaching at CrossFit 580, I have not only gotten in much better shape, but I feel much more productive at work and confident in social situations. I also sleep better and my girlfriend says my snoring has greatly decreased. The only “downside” is now I have to buy new clothes which fit me better!
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit 580 moments:
My favorite moments are the daily interactions I have with the staff and fellow athletes. The support that the coaches give make me want to come back every day and keep getting better. The community at Crossfit 580 is really awesome and is a great reflection on the hard work Joy and Mark have put into the place.
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit 580?
I’m a big fan of traveling and want to explore a new place whenever possible. Coupled with this is a growing interesting in cooking and experimenting with new foods. Ask me to make any dish and I’ll give it a try. Dinner party anybody?
Any advice for people just getting started?
The hardest day will be your first, but it gets better every day you coming back. Stick with the program and you will absolutely see great results. Anybody can do it at any age!
