Tell us about your fitness and/or lifestyle background:
I have always enjoyed being active and when I faced challenges in my personal life working out was my way of coping, still is. Nothing like an a$$ whopping to clear your head. J I signed up for my first half marathon in 2003 and I was reminded of how much I loved running. After that, it was half marathon after half marathon, then two full marathons. I was always looking for a way to challenge myself. I started doing some cycling/spinning, swimming and then added some boot camp style personal training because I wanted to be stronger for running and snowboarding. I was about half way training for another full marathon in 2010, when I got diagnosed with Diabetes. That put a stop to everything fitness related. I was active, I wasn’t supposed to get diabetes. I had to quit running because my glucose levels would raise too high while running and running became a hassle. It was a struggle to be motivated but I kept up with the personal training and cycling, the few things that wouldn’t raise my glucose. I also found out that weight lifting actually lowered my glucose and helped stabilize it throughout the day and I started looking for ways to incorporate more weight training but I hated it because I felt lost and intimidated…until I heard about CrossFit.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit 580? Take us back to your first workout… what was it, and how did it feel?
I heard about this thing called CrossFit from my personal trainer. He would have me do burpees, wall balls, Turkish get-ups and ring rows and I liked the variety of exercises. I also liked not having to think about what my workout was going to be. A friend and I decided to Google CrossFit, we came across CrossFit the Ranch in Salinas but they were in a transition, and basically blew us off, but I was still curious. It looked “fun” and challenging! She actually sent me the link to CrossFit 580 and I was nervous but I sucked it up and emailed Joy, signed up for On-Ramp.
I don’t remember my first workout (probably because I almost passed out)…but my first memorable workout at CrossFit 580 was “12 Days of Christmas”, December 2012. I remember I kept looking at Coach Pete and asking him, which one’s a hang power clean? Which one is a snatch, again? Looking back now I think he was probably SO annoyed with me. I finished in 49:56 with 42#’s. It was an awful workout but I loved all the movements! I’ve done this work out a total of 4 times and each time I’ve improved both my time and amount of weight! December 2015, I was finally able to do the Rx weight! 🙂
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CrossFit 580? (before/after)
Aside from having diabetes, I am in the best health and fitness I have ever been! Unfortunately, I have not lost much weight BUT I have dropped 4 pant sizes and gained so much strength! I can definitely see changes in my body, my upper body especially. Thanks to great coaching, programming and coming in consistently 4-5 times per week since October 2015, I have made the most gains in the last 6 months than I have in the last couple of years. I love being able to run a half marathon with no training other than the daily WOD’s. Hiking and snowboarding are also a lot easier. 6 bags of groceries? I can bring all those in at once! 😉
What changes in your life have you experienced from CrossFit 580 that were totally unexpected?
There have been lots of changes! I am a lot more confident in myself. I don’t feel strong but then I look at my numbers and they prove otherwise. It is amazing to hear the coaches telling me I am so strong.
I have never felt strong, still don’t, but I just go in and do the best that I can and if I fail, at least I can say I tried.
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit 580 moments:
Favorite moments, there are so many! From getting my first rope climb to being able to clean 100#, to going out for drinks with the CrossFit 580 ladies, to just going in every day and seeing everyone. 5am/6am coaches and peeps (past & present) will always hold a special place in my <3.
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit 580?
I love to travel, snowboarding, hiking, party planning, shopping, and of course…all things Disney! 🙂
Any advice for people just getting started?
Just try it! The hardest part is walking in after that its cake…unless there’s burpees, wall balls….oh wait! Just kidding! It’s not cake but you’ll love it! I hope my husband reads this!! I’ve been trying to get him to come in for years!!
