When did you first start training at CrossFit 580?
What is your favorite workout/movement?
Heavy kettlebell squat, toes to bar.
Least favorite workout/movement?
Burpees over the bar
Tell us about your fitness and/or lifestyle background?
I always considered myself active, but never “in-shape.” Years ago, we were gym members. I went a few times a week, but never could find the right workout combination. Then I decided to buy a new bicycle. That was the best thing I had done in years. I found that I started pushing harder and harder to beat my previous times on a known course. Then my wife bought me a GPS- that’s when I really started taking notice to speed and times. Even though riding 50-75 miles a week was great, I still need more to develop upper body strength and overall fitness.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit 580? Take us back to your first workout…what was it and how did you feel?
My wife had heard about CrossFit from a friend. We found CrossFit 580 online and decided to check it out. We wanted somewhere to workout not only as a couple, but as a family (our 13 year-old daughter and 16 year-old son are also members). After checking the box out, Joy invited us to do a boot camp. I remember thinking “ok this looks tough, but just get through it…” After the first one, we were tired and sore, and hooked.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CrossFit 580?
I have noticed that I don’t get tired during the day. Overall health is greatly improved. The more I work-out, the better I feel. Preparation is key- make it part of your lifestyle. I can ride a bicycle 20-plus miles and not be tired when I get home. We did a lot of traveling over this past summer. We walked 8-10 miles on some days and were not as worn-out as we thought we would be.
What changes in your life have you experienced from CrossFit 580 that were totally unexpected?
Definitely a better attitude toward fitness, and life. I am not intimidated when I get to the gym. I never look at the work-out beforehand- just show up and go for it. I love it when my kids arrive cranky and leave happy.

What are you hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit 580?
Cycling, riding off-road motorcycles, building and flying radio-control aircraft, traveling with my family.
Any advice for people just getting started?
“Just do it”. It’s not easy (it’s not supposed to be!). Prepare. Show up and challenge yourself. You’re not there to beat the person next to you — you’re there to improve yourself. Mark and Joy have built and excellent community with CrossFit 580. The coaches are there to do exactly that- coach! They are there to help. If you need advice, they are more than willing to give it. Don’t give up! Some days will be tougher than others. You will see and feel the results.
