Jessica Patrick- June 2015 Athlete Spotlight

Congratulations to Jessica Patrick! You are one badass mom setting the standard for others to follow, keep up the great work!

Jessica Patrick

My dad was Navy so I grew up mostly in Coronado, CA and then we moved to Ridgecrest, CA when I was in high school.

When did you first start training at CrossFit 580?
I started with my husband Chris in March of 2013.

What is your favorite workout/movement?
I cannot really pinpoint a favorite workout but I generally like any workout that has running. Rowing is slowly growing on me too. My favorite movements are any type of squat and deadlifts.

Least favorite workout/movement?
My least favorite workouts usually have burpees and bear crawls in them. I think I’m scarred for life from bear crawls… I am a scaredy cat of anything overhead also.

Tell us about your fitness and/or lifestyle background:
Back in 2008 after a couple health scares from my mom and father in law I decided to start exercising after being a couch potato for a long, long time. I knew that I wanted to lead an active healthy lifestyle so that I could be around for a long time and set an awesome health example for my girls. I started running with a local running group through the Livermore mom’s club, attended a boot camp in Pleasanton, and I even did some personal training sessions to help with my running. I really enjoyed running but when I was pregnant with our third daughter in 2012 I stopped and then never fully took it back up.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit 580? Take us back to your first workout… what was it, and how did it feel? . I had heard of CrossFit and watched the videos and thought they look so strong and fit and it looked like something that would break me out of my postpartum exercise funk. After watching a video of a girlfriend (who works out at Pleasanton CrossFit) I was convinced I needed to join CrossFit580 so I bugged (and bugged) Chris to sign us up! I really don’t remember what my first workout was but I remember being really, really nervous and really, really out of shape.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CrossFit580? (before/after)
Well I’m definitely stronger now then I’ve ever, ever been. I have actual muscles that I can see which is pretty cool. I’m also more aware of my nutrition and the effect it has on my body and workouts. Also, because CrossFit is so well rounded I can still go out and join my old running group from time to time and bust out 4 miles no problem.

What changes in your life have you experienced from CrossFit 580 that were totally unexpected?
Something unexpected is that I’ve gained a lot more confidence in myself. I’ve always struggled with body issues and CrossFit has really helped me to see that being fit and strong is much better then being “skinny”. Also, it is a really neat feeling to experience the strength gains when you stick to coming in weekly. To remember where I started on the 15 pound bar to where I am now is a big confidence booster.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit 580 moments:
Some favorite moments are when I got my first rope climb. I didn’t think I would do it because I was scared to climb that high but one morning I just decided to keep climbing and I yelled to April “go get your camera!!” Haha! Another was when April taught me how to use the backpack method for handstand pushups… that was pretty funny and fun! My most recent was when I RX’d Annie. That was pretty awesome!

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit 580?
Well, I’m a stay at home mom or as I like to sometimes say the Chief Operations Officer of the Patrick Household. So a lot of my time is dedicated to our three daughters ages 9,7, and 2. When I’m not busy with the girls, doing endless laundry, or trying (in vain) to keep the house clean I am busy volunteering with our local MOPS program at our church or going to bible study. I love to run, I love the movies, I love to read and I’m really good at making cupcakes.

Any advice for people just getting started?
I would say don’t be intimidated and don’t compare yourself to others. Stick with it and if you can come more than 2 days a week sign up for more! You won’t regret it!
