It’s time again to announce our Athlete of the Month! A HUGE congratulations to Kate Young, our July Athlete of the Month! Keep up the great work!….check out her transformation story below!

Name: Kate Young

Hometown: Macon, GA originally, but now Livermore!

Age: 27

Started CrossFit 580:  January 2016

Favorite movement: Deadlift

Least favorite movement:  Burpees and Thrusters are the bane of my existence!

Tell us about your fitness/lifestyle background: 
In high school, I was a totally sedentary person addicted to World of Warcraft and steadily gaining weight. I had a wakeup call at the doctor’s office one day and started my weight loss journey, but working out always felt like a chore that I was obligated to do. Fast forward a few years and some yo-yoing in my success and I decided to try out CrossFit since it sounded interesting. I fell in love – now I look forward to hitting the gym and enjoy my time working out instead of feeling like I’m doing a stupid chore. It changed everything for me!

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit 580? 
I was Googling around for boxes in the Livermore/Pleasanton area since I had just moved here at the time. 580 was one of the choices on the list and it was the one that “clicked” =)

What have you seen in your body, health, and fitness since starting CrossFit 580 (before/after)? 
I’m so much stronger now than I was before! My lifts have increased significantly and I’ve actually got visible muscle definition now. I’ve decreased my overall body fat percentage by 4% since joining CF 580, and I actually get irritable and restless if I go too long without working out. I can do a lot of things I’ve never been able to do before in my life and never thought I’d be able to do successfully, like climb a rope!

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit 580 moments:
I can’t pick just one! Honestly, I just love it that everyone comes together and supports one another. It’s great when people cheer for others in class hitting those PRs and when people high-five each other passing one another on a running lap. CF580 is just such a wonderful, supportive atmosphere 🙂 I love everyone’s sense of humor, too!

What are you hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit 580?
I try to get out and explore the bay area and California in general as much as possible, since I haven’t been here too long yet. I want to see it all! I love going to conventions like DragonCon – I’m really a big geek at heart. Does binge watching Netflix count as a talent? 😉

Any advice for people just getting started?
Don’t be afraid of CrossFit! Anyone can do it and everything is scale-able. Listen to your body and listen to your coaches. Be patient – there was a time that I thought I could never do half the stuff I saw other people doing, but now I’m closer than I ever was before! Don’t give up. Consistency is key.
