Tell us about your fitness/lifestyle background:

While I was never much of an athlete growing up, I started working out in my late teens. I quickly discovered how much I enjoyed how good exercise made me feel, both physically and mentally and I maintained a gym membership at various clubs throughout my twenties. In my thirties, married and with two young children, I transitioned to using exercise DVDs (TaeBo was my go-to workout at that time). Between 2003-2007, I also ran – training for and completing a few local races. I loved the “runner’s high” and was hooked, training for my first full marathon when knee injuries made it too painful to continue. So, in 2007 I reluctantly returned to DVD workouts (primarily P90X) and home exercise equipment which remained my primary exercise source for several years. I was disappointed with the lack of any real results and bored with the mundane routine, but I refused to give up because I didn’t know what else to do. Even though the kids were getting older and going to a gym was again an option, I didn’t see how paying for a membership to hop on a bike or elliptical machine when I could do that at home made any sense. So bored and complacent, I continued with my uninspired routine.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit580?

It was early 2014 and I had been hearing little bits about “CrossFit” but had no idea what it was. It wasn’t until a mom from my son’s school told me more about it. I was intrigued and really wanted to give it a try, so I did a web search and found the closest location to my house which was CrossFit 580. I was a little nervous, but I called and asked lots of questions about CrossFit in general, types of workouts, fitness requirements, family membership options, etc. I was particularly intrigued by the option to have our kids join us. At that stage, I was hoping to find an effective fitness program to push me out of this rut that I could do not only with my husband but with our son and daughter as well. At ages 11 and 14, we thought it would be a good experience for both kids, instilling a habit of regular exercise early on. And since my husband and I both worked full time, finding something to help us stay healthy and that we could all do together as a family was a great option. So, in July of 2014, we joined after a trial class, went through the OnRamp process in order to learn proper lifting techniques and started going to boot camp classes as a family. Feeling a little intimidated by the weightlifting, thinking we weren’t ready or strong enough, we didn’t venture into regular CrossFit classes until about a year later. Looking back, it was completely unnecessary for us to wait. Had we known we could modify movements based on our abilities and individual fitness levels, we would have jumped right into the CrossFit classes from the beginning.

What have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CrossFit580 (before/after)?

For most of my adult life, I’ve been in okay shape as I’ve tried to maintain a healthy lifestyle but that’s all it was – maintenance. I’d been lulled into a comfort zone, doing only what I felt like doing and shying away from anything that pushed me too much. CrossFit 580 has been such a life-changing experience for me and my entire family. Every day that we walk through those doors, we are encouraged to do more and try harder than we would ever do or try on our own. As self-motivated as I am, I would never push myself like I do when I’ve got an engaging and inspiring coach and a group of supportive friends/co-members, sweating right next to me and encouraging me to never stop going, trying and pushing. The varied workouts keep me challenged and even though I may not like a particular movement some days, I know it’s only exposing my weak areas and making me stronger. And as my reward, I’ve got more muscle tone, have better cardio endurance and am stronger than I’ve ever been which benefits all areas of my life. Being in such an encouraging and supportive community has not only impacted my fitness but my overall lifestyle as well as we’ve adopted much more healthy eating habits as a family. This level of accountability can only be found in community and this CrossFit 580 community is one we’ve come to know and love as our extended family over the last four years.

Please share with us any favorite CrossFit 580 moments:

I’ve got so many fond memories from CrossFit 580, some my own, some of my children and some outside the box as this close-knit group of awesome people hangs out and celebrates both big and small moments of life together. We work hard and play hard too.

Some of my favorite moments here have been witnessing the fitness milestones and successes achieved by my family. Watching my 15-year-old daughter discover how strong she really is as she reaches a new PR in her deadlift or the surprise on my (then) 16-year-old son’s face as he hit a new personal record for back squats. This experience has so enriched all of our lives, but it’s been especially exciting to see the transformation in both kids as we’ve watched them grow not only in strength but in their confidence. This inner strength they’ve developed because they’ve discovered the athlete inside has been such an invaluable, hard-earned gift that none of us would trade for anything and it’s carried both of them through some very challenging times.

I can also look fondly back on the PRs I’ve achieved over the last few years. Discovering how strong I am and being surprised when the weight on the bar is actually more than what I’d planned to lift is so gratifying. Learning how to silence the inner critic who always wants to doubt I can continue to do it is probably one of the most challenging issues I deal with, but it’s so rewarding when I can prove that inner critic wrong.

Having fun at and outside the box offers several other great memories whether it’s celebrating a birthday (coach Steve sporting his onesie) or getting together for a holiday pub crawl or a summer barbecue at a local winery or participating in a local bike ride with a couple fellow CrossFit pals and finishing so strongly (we surprised ourselves at how well we’d done thanks to our CrossFit training). All such gratifying and enjoyable memories, made with some very special people.

What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of Crossfit580?

One of my favorite interests is cycling throughout the beautiful trails of Livermore with my husband. Right before we joined CrossFit 580, we started riding our bikes as another healthy way to spend time together. It’s become a hobby we enjoy sharing and doing CrossFit has helped us increase our mileage and speed as our cardio has improved over the years. I also love to travel, especially internationally. I’ve been lucky enough to visit a number of countries around the world, some on vacation but a number of them through work-related trips. I love being able to travel to new and exciting places and share those experiences with my husband and kids.

Any advice for people just getting started?

Go for it! Don’t be intimidated and just bring your best because the only person you’re competing against is yourself. You’d be hard pressed to find a more humble and welcoming group of athletes with the widest range of abilities you can imagine so don’t be afraid to jump right in. They’re all here to support and cheer you on to bring and be your very best and you’ll probably even make a friend or two. I know some of my closest friends are right here.
